JUNIOR UPDATE
26th July 2008
We’ve just started the second half of the season and so far so good as far as all our junior teams are concerned.
In addition to our own coaches, we are now joined on a Monday night by 3 Level 2+ coaches in Damian Eyre, Dave Dickin and Michael Scott. Our thanks go to all three and I know the U13s in particular have benefited from their coaching so its money well spent.
Our 9-11 age group have continued to grow in numbers and to improve. I think we had our youngest ever player in our U9s tournament and everyone watching was impressed, so well done to Ben. Our thanks go to Pixie and Dave Scott for their help in running the U9s, we are really grateful for your help.
Our U13s have now won 2 games and drawn one since my last report. Our wins came against Flowery Field and Glossop and our draw against DSL. I have lost count of the number of games we have lost by just a few runs so well done to all the boys. Special mention this time to Alex Beeley who is having a great season, lots of retirements and great fielding.
Our U15s are now managed by Saf Ismail. We are mid table in the league but are in the U15s Cup Final. This will be played at Glossop on 10th August at 10am. The semi final against Flowery Field was one of the best games played all year. A great bowling and fielding display gave us an achievable 96 to win and two superb batting performances from Anthony Cross and Jarrod Holmes saw us home. Well done to all the boys and good luck in the final.
Our U17s are still going strong. They are still unbeaten in the league and are also in the Cup Final. This will take place on Sunday 3rd August at 2pm. The venue will either be Prestwich or Glossop because Janak lost the toss twice!! Good performances from all the team but I don’t feel we have yet reached our best. Last weeks game at Glossop was unbelievable. We batted first and reached a very unimpressive 80 at the end of the overs – well done to Jamie Garde though with 43. I think everyone seemed to think that this was the hiccup we usually experience during the season but the lads thought differently. Glossop were bowled out for 29, yes that’s right 29!! Gardy got the show on the road by having David Toft caught behind without scoring and after Janak had taken a great caught and bowled and Sam Egerton got a wicket with his first ball it was time for the Matthew Ricketts show. His figures of 5 wickets for one run off 3.4 overs are amazing but even more so when you think that the one run came from a fielding error. Our road to the final was quite calm until a semi final against Unsworth which came down to the last ball. Everyone knows the history of the game and that on reflection it was probably our worst game of the season so far, but I must applaud Jack Stenson and Jamie Wimpenny for holding their nerve and seeing us home. I think Neill Garde set a record that evening for the amount of cigarettes smoked so lets hope the final isn’t as stressful for him.
Apologies if I have left anyone out. If you think you deserve a mention please have a word with me and you can go in the next report. Tony Stenson has organised a coach for the U17s final for the players and families but there may be spaces left so look on the noticeboard for further information.
